Mawson's Aurora Expedition

The Science of Ideas and Technology Group present:
MAWSON’S AURORA EXPEDITION 1911-14: AUSTRALIA’S FIRST MAJOR OVERSEAS SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION

SPEAKER: Mark Pharaoh (Manager of the SA Museum’s Mawson Centre)
WHEN: Monday 24 October 2011 at 7 pm
WHERE: Ira Raymond Exhibition Room (Just inside the main doors of the Barr Smith Library,
University of Adelaide, North Terrace, Adelaide)

This talk coincides with the centenary of Australasia’s first Antarctic Expedition, examining in particular the ideas behind polar exploration circa 1910 (including Douglas Mawson’s “Epic Sledge Journey”), his focus on polar science rather than ‘pole-bagging’, and the pioneering use of technology – Antarctic attempts at the first heavier-than-air ascent, radio telegraphy, and colour photography.

A very brief Annual General Meeting will be held just before the lecture.
