German Australian Connections Network end of year gathering.

Tuesday November 13, Ira Raymond Room, Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide.

5.30 for 6pm

Join us for our last meeting of the year, when co-Chair Lee Kersten will briefly report on the successful seminar program we have held in 2012 and outline plans for 2013.

Music specialist, Dr Jula Szuster, will speak on German-Australian composer, Carl Linger.

Carl Linger’s Missing Legacy

The German émigré Carl Linger was South Australia’s foremost musician in the 1850s and early 1860s and is best known as the composer of the Song of Australia. Yet he also wrote a considerable amount of instrumental and vocal music – much of which no longer exists. The paper will evaluate Linger’s contribution to the cultural life of his adopted home, and discuss the possible fate of his missing compositions. Performances of some of his compositions will be included in the talk.

Dr Jula Szuster is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Elder Conservatorium, University of Adelaide. Her research interests include 17th Century Italian music and the cultural life in Adelaide since settlement in 1836.

She is Managing Editor of the Journal of Music Research Online (, published by the Music Council of Australia. Jula worked for the SA Government for 34 years in music education and arts funding.
